What Happens to Demolition Waste in Victoria?

3 November 2026 · 5 min read

By NextSite Demolition · Updated 3 November 2026

A demolished house produces an enormous amount of material — concrete, brick, timber, steel, plaster and general waste. Where it all goes matters for the environment and for your hip pocket: disposal and tipping fees are one of the biggest components of any demolition quote.

What gets recycled

Concrete and brick: crushed and reused as road base and aggregate. Clean loads are cheaper to dispose of than mixed waste.

Steel and metals: roofing, frames and reinforcement are almost always recycled, and the salvage value can offset your cost.

Timber and fittings: reusable doors, windows, floorboards and fixtures can be salvaged where they're in good condition.

What can't be recycled

Mixed general waste goes to licensed landfill, and tipping fees in Victoria continue to rise — which is why separating materials on site matters.

Asbestos is in a category of its own: it must be removed by licensed professionals, sealed, and transported to an EPA-approved facility. It can never go in a standard skip.

Why it matters for your quote

A quote that separates recyclable materials from general waste is usually sharper than one that treats everything as landfill. Ask what's included in disposal — our quotes itemise it clearly, with salvage credits applied where they're genuinely available.
